Miami Beach's Fall Restaurant Openings: The Returns Arrived First

On October 7, Balan's posted an Instagram video from 1022 Lincoln Road. It said brunch, lunch, dinner and happy hour were all running again and that it felt good to be back in the neighborhood, as the Miami Beach Journal reported the next day. The brasserie opened its first U.S. location at that same address in 1997.

The Lincoln Road directory still listed Ukiyo, the conveyor-belt sushi restaurant planned for 818 Lincoln Road, as "Coming Soon" on October 9. That was the middle of the month it had targeted.

Those two addresses show how this fall's opening season has gone so far. The restaurants that came back to places they already knew were the first to open their doors. Most of the brand-new concepts are still listed as coming soon. And at the hotels that house so much of the Beach's dining, decisions about the building are setting the pace for the kitchen.

Where each fall opening stood

The table below shows the latest status reported for each opening before this post went out. It's meant to save you a wasted trip.

Balan's went home, and the hours changed on the way

Balan's took back its own address. Owners Jonathan and Keva Balan had replaced Balan's with Issabella's, a Mediterranean concept, in 2021. Issabella's held its final service on August 30, and Balan's reopened on September 17. Miami New Times reported that the family called it a homecoming, saying "it feels like Balan's is coming home." Balan's started in London in 1987 and has kept its Mary Brickell Village location open since 2008.

Check the hours before you go. The August announcement promised daily brunch and happy hour seven days a week. The more recent Lincoln Road directory listing shows something different:

  • Wednesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Sunday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Closed Monday and Tuesday

If you want a weekday brunch on Lincoln Road, call ahead on a Monday or Tuesday.

Bazaar Meat waited 17 months for its hotel

Bazaar Meat by José Andrés was scheduled to open October 22 at the Andaz Miami Beach, 4041 Collins Ave. The restaurant's own announcement is titled "Bazaar is Back in Miami," and its reservations went live before opening day. Miami New Times describes the concept as a theatrical take on the steakhouse, with meats from around the world alongside seafood, vegetables and cocktails, and with South Florida influences for this location.

The restaurant was the last piece of a much longer hotel project. In 2022, Sunstone Hotel Investors announced plans to turn The Confidante into the Andaz. The plan called for a renovation of roughly $60 million, including a relocated ocean-view lobby, rethought food and beverage venues, a renewed pool area and upgraded rooms, with completion projected for the first half of 2024. Hyatt announced the Andaz open on May 5, 2025, with 287 guestrooms, two heated outdoor pools, a spa, a beach club and three José Andrés Group dining concepts.

So the hotel opened about a year after its projected date, and the steakhouse followed about 17 months after that. By the Bazaar's timetable, the October date was the end of a multiyear schedule. That helps explain why it was the only fall opening on Collins with a firm day and a live reservation book.

Lincoln Road's 800 block is still waiting

Ukiyo is a 7,431-square-foot restaurant built around kaiten, Japan's conveyor-belt sushi format, with a custom belt carrying handmade sushi around the dining room. Executive chef Nono Shigetomi's menu also lists tableside kamameshi, robata skewers, paitan ramen and dumplings served from a roaming cart. Miami New Times first reported the project on September 14, describing theatrical performances as part of the format.

The mid-October target came and went with the directory still saying "Coming Soon," and the listing gave no hours. Balan's, two blocks west at 1022, was serving brunch weeks earlier. A restaurant returning to its own kitchen opened before a new build of this size.

Three more dates written in pencil

The rest of the fall list shares one trait: each opening is a new concept, and each had a month or a season as its target, not a fixed day.

  1. Zebra Club, 150 20th St. This restaurant and bar beneath the Townhouse Hotel brings together James Beard Award-winning chef Michelle Bernstein, cocktail authority Naren Young, and Dan Binkiewicz and David Martinez, the team behind Schmuck, Café La Trova, Medium Cool and Sweet Liberty. The plans include crystal chandeliers, red semicircular banquettes, a marble-topped bar and tuxedo-clad servers with a custom martini cart. It was announced for October, and its website still read "Opening soon."
  2. Royale Pizza Napoletana, 1680 Meridian Ave. Billed as Florida's first Tokyo-style Neapolitan pizzeria, Royale is led by pizzaiolo Bungo Kaneko, known as Chef Bun, whose blistered pies helped define the style at Tokyo's Savoy. Expect his 30-hour fermented dough, plus antipasti and house-made pastas. On October 15, the South Florida Sun Times wrote about it as still ahead of its October debut.
  3. Luca Trattoria, 933 Normandy Dr. Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli, of Eating House and Coral Gables' Luca Osteria, is bringing a sister concept to Normandy Isles, with seasonal Italian cooking and a wine list that covers Italian, European and Argentine producers. In late September, both Miami New Times and The Infatuation still listed it only for fall.

For North Beach, Luca Trattoria is the one to follow. It's the only name on this fall's list north of Mid-Beach.

When a hotel changes hands, its restaurant goes quiet

The same hotel-driven timing that set Bazaar Meat's schedule is working in reverse at 2216 Park Ave. Las' Lap opened inside the Daydrift hotel in August 2025. It was the second location of the Lower East Side bar, with chef Kwame Onwuachi overseeing a West Indian and Afro-Caribbean menu. In a statement to Miami New Times, the restaurant said:

"When we closed on June 28, we had every intention of reopening in September, with plans to evolve the concept and bring more of the energy and identity of our Lower East Side bar to the Miami location."

In the same statement, the restaurant said it had since learned the hotel was being sold and that the prospective new owners planned to gut and reimagine the space, which had left Las' Lap in limbo. La Grande Boucherie, the French restaurant that also arrived from New York in 2025, calls its closure a "brief seasonal pause." In its September 11 summer-closures roundup, New Times reported that neither restaurant had confirmed a reopening date.

The Andaz finished its renovation before Bazaar Meat set a firm day, and the Daydrift's pending sale has kept Las' Lap closed past the September return it planned.

One November date that won't move

The city's own calendar is firmer than any restaurant's. The free Miami Beach Culture Crawl, "The Other Rome," runs November 19 from 6 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. conversation at The Wolfsonian–FIU, 1001 Washington Ave., according to the City of Miami Beach events listing. The Wolfsonian is a short walk south of Lincoln Road, so a Culture Crawl evening can end with dinner at Balan's.

Which restaurants open on schedule depends partly on who owns the building around them. That's the same thing we look at when we value property in Miami Beach.
